Yesterday, Derrick and Ethan were outside, loading up twigs and sticks to haul to Grandma & Grandpa Huffey's house, when Derrick decided to check on the bird that has made a nest in our gutter.
To our surprise, there were baby birds in the nest!
Derrick lifted Ethan up so he could see them too. He talked about the baby birdies all night. I did some research to find out what type of birds they were, and I think they are
Mourning Doves. I have tried to get a picture of the Mamma but she is fast and hidden when in her nest.
Later on, after Ethan went to bed, I headed outside to do my wonderful job of picking up dog poop (we really need to get a pooper scooper). As I was walking around the side of the deck I noticed some straw hanging down. I took a closer look and noticed it was a nest!
Curious as to if there was anything in it, I took a peek... and sure enough, it had 4 perfect blue eggs.
The nest was really impressive, perfectly round, and held together with mud and straw.
It was a lot different than the one in the gutter. I figured, from the color of the eggs, that it was a Robin's nest.
I filled the bird feeder while I was out there and went inside to watch from the window to see if the Mama bird would return. She was watching from the nearby tree and didn't go to the nest while I watched.
Today, I took Ethan outside and took some pictures of the nest and showed him the eggs. He doesn't understand what they are yet, but it will be fun to check on the progress of the eggs and really exciting when they hatch and we can hear them begging for food!
