Homemade Christmas - Fish Crayons

We are going to try and make a lot of our Christmas gifts this year, and Ethan wanted to make crayon fish for a holiday gift exchange. It was fun to break, chop, arrange and melt the crayons down.

We had a great time making a mess with this project while Everett was sleeping and the finished project was AWESOME!

While we waited for the crayons to cool, we decided to make a coloring journal from the crayon paper wrappers left over. We had soaked them in warm water to get them to come off the crayons nicely, so we first dried them in the warm oven before decoupaging them on the book cover. (I didn't get a pic of the book, but it turned out really nice!)





For the crayon molds:

1 silicone baking/ice cube tray
assortment of crayons (paper removed)

For easier paper removal, place the crayons in a bath of hot/warm tap water and soak for 3-5 mins. Remove and peel. Place the crayon paper on a cookie sheet and insert into a warm oven (170 degrees) for 2-3 mins or until dry (watch this so not to burn). Cut up crayons and place them in the molds. Insert silicone mold into the oven (I supported mine with a cookie sheet underneath to prevent spilling or bowing) preheated to 250 degrees, and bake until crayons are melted, checking often so not melt completely (the colors will all mix if left in too long). Remove from oven and place immediately into freezer for 5-10 minutes or until firm. Let sit 5 minutes and carefully remove from silicone mold.
